Scales, timetables and Charts

In Maths we have been learning to interpret and use scales, Timetables and charts.

Here is a link to our online modelling book.

These are the activities that I have completed as part of this learning.
  • When and weather
  • Oct 17, 2017 10:53:11 AM.jpgOct 17, 2017 10:55:10 AM.jpg
  • Roundabout Rugby ( this was if you wanted an extra activity so I did not do it)

My next Step is to apply the new knowledge that I have gained to real life situations eg using airport/bus timetables.

WALT: Write an effective argument for our chosen political party.

Do you like the idea of voting for National? Then you are in the right place because they have great policies! In my opinion, NZ should keep National in the government because it is the best choice for the country and people of New Zealand. In this argument I am going to talk about building a new hospital in Dunedin, giving all primary school students with the opportunity to learn another language, and working towards making NZ a smoke free country by 2025. NZ is a very safe country, but do you want it to be even safer?
If you do than National is the party to vote for…

Working towards NZ being smoke free by 2025. It is also a good idea because a single cigarette contains over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer. The people who do smoke could live safer and healthier lives if they quit smoking. Another great policy is to do with Dunedin...

Building a new hospital in Dunedin. This is a good policy because I think that Dunedin needs a new hospital, as well as it being new it will get new and improved technology and things to help people get better. I think that it is also a good idea because, sometimes when it is cold, (which it is usually in Dunedin), people get the flu or a cold and sometimes the flu can turn into a very BAD case of the flu and people have to go the the hospital. As well as building new hospitals the last policy I will be talking about will be to do with different languages.

Provide all primary school students with the opportunity to learn another language. This means, for any student that is in primary school, AND that wants to learn a new language. I think that it is a good policy because it would give them the opportunity to learn about what culture as well as learning the language. It is also a good idea because it will give them an advantage in future life. The next policy is one that I am against.

Reduce assessment in schools. This means that they would be lowering the amount of testing and assessment tasks in schools. I don’t think they should, because they might not know what group they should be in because they didn’t do enough testing. It is also a not so great idea because you might not get enough testing and then you might not get smart. These are the policies I have talked about, some I agree with some I am against.

These are the policies that I have an interest in. In my opinion, National is a good party to vote for and that we should keep them in Government. The policies I have talked about are working towards NZ being smokefree by 2025, building a new hospital in Dunedin, providing primary students with the opportunity to learn another language and reducing the testing for students. Do you think that my ideas are good? I do. I think that we should all follow these policies and have better lives.

My next steps are:

Do different policies and maybe do a few extra, to make it longer and more interesting.

NZ Identity: Parliament.

As part of our New Zealand Identity unit we have been learning all about New Zealand Parliament.

Here is a link to the online modelling book for this unit if learning.

We have learned all about the different roles that people have in parliament.

Key roles in Parliament Activity

Some things that I have found interesting are:
  • What an MP is
  • How a government is formed
  • and what the different roles are in parliament

My next step is to see parliament in reality next year on my Wellington trip.

Book Review Term 2

V.I.P. I'm With The Band
By Jen Calonita

This book is about a girl whose name is Mackenzie Lowell (Mac), who is in love with the boy band Perfect Storm and loves drawing, especially her alter ego comic character, Mac Attack. She says she has the most amazing Mum in the world because when she and her friends miss out on winning tickets to Perfect Storms concert her Mum saves them by barging in her room with four V.I.P. tickets to the Perfect Storm concert in town. But when her Mum is the new manager of the band she gets to go on their tour around the world she realizes that her crush, Zander Welling (the lead singer of the group), is not her crush after all and that she likes the quieter band member, Kyle Beyer. It is a book all about girls, boys, bands, best friends and crushes. I would recommend this book to people who like to read about other peoples problems and understands there pain. In the end she realizes that she had made a BIG MISTAKE.
Read the book to find out more about what happens!

Term 2 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel Silverstream.

I found this novel very interesting because it tells you about the freedom in other places.

During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • I can identify and evaluate the way writers’ use language and ideas to suit their purpose and I can use my growing wide range of academic and content-specific vocabulary to understand texts.

  • Overall I would give this novel a rating of  10/10 and I would recommend it to others to read because it is a good book and it teaches you about freedom in other places and I definitely would recomend it to people who like to read and also like the suspense when you have to put it down.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:

  • Year7/8: I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

My Next Step is to continue to  apply the reading and  research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.

Music term 2

For Music this term, three things I learnt were:

1. A rap called 'Mother Earth'

2.What are the properties of hip-hop

3.We wrote a rap about school

Something I found challenging was performing the rap in front of my class.

Maths: Assessment task

Assessment task: Communicate and interpret locations and directions, using compass directions, distances, and grid references

To complete this task you will need a paper copy of the treasure map - These are in Mrs Stinson's drawer in the Whanau zone -please ask her for one. You will need to complete the task here and add a photo of your treasure map when it is done to this document and then turn in.
I got a few of the directions wrong and Amber (the person who was finding the treasure) missed out on the second clue, so that is how she got all they way over there, at the edge of the water instead of at the Rations dump!

Careers Education C.V. Writing

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Here is a link to our online Modelling Book that shows the process we have followed.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:

  1. That it has to be clean and white.

  1. That it has to have two referees that they contact and ask about you.

  1. That spelling/punctuation mistakes are vital.

Here is a link to my Skills based Curriculum Vitae.

I can make links across texts by recognising connectives or adverbial clauses

In this unit learnt what an adverbial clause is and also what a connective is.

A connective is a word that connects a sentence or an idea.

An adverbial clause is a sentence that is before or after the comma.

Here is a link to a compare and contrast map of an adverbial clause and a connective

Home Learning Challenge, A2- Use a creative ICT tool to make a present for someone.

On Saturday the 6th of May 2017
I made a Collage for my Nanna as a present. I think she will like it because it has photos of her and my family. It also has photos of her favorite flowers and some of things that will remind her that we love her.

My Favourite book from Term 1

Thirteen Candles
Thirteen candles is about a girl who's name is Julia. Julia is just turning thirteen and to her surprise when she goes to blow out her birthday candles (thirteen of them, hence the title) that they blow out on there own. As they are watching the video of her family and her best friend singing 'Happy Birthday' their seems to be a shadow behind Julia it looks exactly the same as her. She thinks it is just her shadow but after the shadow saves her life she is starting to get suspicious. I think it is a really good book and recommend it to people that like graphic novels.

Home Learning Challenge-R2

On the Monday of Week 10 I made cupcakes for my neighbor for the Home Learning Challenge so I can achieve my merit badge.
The Challenge I did was bake some cookies for your neighbor so I assumed that I could bake some cupcakes instead of cookies.
17522304_10154363167987823_1341886643_o.jpg
First I set the oven to the right temperature then I got the ingredients out and ready. Flour, Sugar, Cocoa Powder, Butter, Egg and some chopped up chunks of a Chocolate Bar.
17820363_10154363167972823_853729884_o.jpg
So I made the cupcakes and they turned out great! I let them cool then I made the icing. Water, Icing Sugar, Food Colouring and some Peppermint Essence.17841866_10154363167937823_387232230_n.jpg
Then I grated the rest of the Chocolate Bar and it turned out to look like chocolate crumbs so I put it in a bowl and left it to the side for later.

Once the cakes had cooled I put the icing on and then sprinkled some chocolate crumbs on top. Don’t they look delicious!

I delivered them to my neighbor and she was very pleased!
