Literacy Week
Week 4 Blog
What?
This week was literacy week. We did heaps of things like, the scavenger hunt, dress up day on Thursday, the golden ticket hunt and even an author came in, her name was Soraya Nicholas, and much, much more.
So what?
I enjoyed, the scavenger hunt, and listening to one of Soraya's books. I also liked looking for the golden tickets, (even though we didn't find one!)

WHAT?
I have been learning to improve my swimming skills
SO WHAT?
For the last two weeks, room 24 has been going to Star Fish swim school.
I have learned to do free style, back stroke, breast stroke and butterfly.
NOW WHAT?
I think I need to improve on breast stroke.

Travis Wetlands writing
What? We have been learning about habitats and species as part of our science - living world learning.
Our big question is: What changes do I need to make to protect habitats & species?
So What? Some of the things I have learned during our interchange are:
* Native and introduced species
* Habitats
* Human Impact
* Animal ClassificationI enjoyed learning about the animals that live there and what the Travis Wetlands provides and what it acts like.
Travis Wetlands:
Earlier this term we went to the Travis Wetlands. Here is a photo of my writing showing some of the things we learned.
What I enjoyed most about the trip was seeing the birds on the water through the binoculars.
Travis Wetlands
History of Christchurch.
Before the European settlers, Christchurch was a wetland habitat. In the 1800’s the percentage of wetlands was 95%. When the European settlers came they drained most of it out and by the year 2000 the percentage had dropped to 3%. By then there were only a few wetland areas left including, Travis and Wigram wetlands.
What the Travis Wetlands Provides.
The Travis Wetlands acts as five things. They are a sponge, because it soaks up some of the water in winter and releases it in summer. An airport, because they come to rest and refuel. A sieve, because it cleans the water by ‘sieving’ the sand and liquefaction out. A nest, because they can breed and care for their young. Last of all, a bed and breakfast, because the animals can come and use Travis Wetlands as a hotel.

Writing update
This week I am reflecting on one of my writing goals
IALT: Improve my writing by learning how to:
* use a variety of sentence starters
This week I have been focusing on how to write a drop-in clause
SO WHAT?
Here is an example of a drop-in clause
Mr Forman is our teacher.
|
He loves his red car.
|
Mr Forman, who is our teacher, loves his red car.
|
Mr Forman is the subject of the sentence.
We change ‘He’ to ‘who’
We place commas around the clause we ‘drop-in’
MY EXAMPLES:
Here are two examples of a drop-in clause that I have created.
[1]The dinosaur, who was singing Barbie Girl, was chasing the boy.
[2]The teacher, who was wearing a nappy, shouted at class.
NOW WHAT?

Healthy Harold visit
What?
Our big question is, What does our body need to stay healthy and happy?Room 24 has gone to the Life Education truck with Harold twice.
So What?
We learned that sugar, salt and fat have lots of different names. There is the Nutritional Information on the back of all foods so you can see if what you are getting is healthy.
Now What?
I am going to use the Nutritional Information on the back of the food packet.

Year 6 Camp
What?
Two weeks ago the year 6's went on a camp to Waipara
So what?
At camp we did lots of activities like, Absailing, Canoeing, Team building and moor
I enjoyed the Canoeing because it was fun doing the activities like the one where we had to climb over the canoes to the end and then you had to climb all the way back to your own canoe. The most challenging activity was Ablailing because it was hard to keep my feet apart so I kept almost falling over.
Now what?
The skills I learned on camp are really going to help me through the year.
